I wondered how my photography abilities would transfer to food. I’ve always approached photography with an abstract mindset, trying to find something within nothing. But photographing food is inherently different, as the goal is generally to capture the subject, and unlike portraits, there are no expressions and experiences to capture.

One would think that photographing food would be easy, all you need do is take a pic of some good looking munchables, but as someone who learned photography from a completely unique/abstract perspective, it was surprisingly challenging. Not to mention that my personal lighting setup is subpar, it is something I will definitely be upgrading in the future.

Teriyaki Spam Musubi

Spam Musubi is one of my all time favorite foods, alongside Sushi. Sticky white rice seasoned with Furikake, and adorned with Teriyaki Spam and Fried Egg, all wrapped in Nori.

I grew up with this food as it’s somewhat of a Hawaiian novelty. That being said, the seaweed can be very fragile when preparing the meal, overall this one was a great learning experience.

Pigs in a Blanket?

Such a simple food, and yet so delicious. Not to mention they look quite scrumptious.

Bagel Breakfast

I may not be a huge fan of bagels, but for being such a simple food it sure can fill you up. Plus, who doesn’t love a good coffee.

Admittedly, these photos did not turn out the way I’d wanted. I didn’t have nearly the right lighting equipment, or lighting setup. However I learned a lot from these pictures; honestly this might have been one of the fastest lessons I’ve learned throughout my photography journey, you can really see the improvement when comparing these photos to the ramen photos.
